CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — A local support group is hosting information sessions for Islanders living with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD).

October is ADHD Awareness Month, and ADHD P.E.I. is hosting a drop-in for the public on Oct. 9 and 23.

The drop-in information sessions will be in the boardroom of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA P.E.I.) at 178 Fitzroy St., 7:30-9:30 p.m. Light refreshments will be provided.

“Sometimes people need information, and sometimes people need the support of knowing they are not alone. ADHD P.E.I. hopes it will be able to provide both to the local community,” says Sandy Slade, who facilitates weekly ADHD peer support meetings.

The October information sessions are being held to increase education and awareness of ADHD. A lot of misinformation exists about the condition and how much of an impact it can have on people's lives. There will be information available about the condition and treatment options, as well as services offered in the community.

The drop-ins will also be an opportunity for the community to engage, learn about ADHD and meet others who are passionate about this topic.

These sessions will be open to everyone, including those living with ADHD/ADD and their loved ones.

In September 2018, ADHD P.E.I. began running weekly peer support meetings on Wednesday evenings.

ADHD P.E.I.’s vision is for people living with ADHD on P.E.I. to be accepted, understood and thriving. ADHD P.E.I. is currently an unregistered, unincorporated resident company at the Start-Up Zone with a goal to become a registered not-for-profit in 2020.
