Junior Gould has been elected chief of Abegweit First Nation.
Gould, who previously held the position from 2003-2007, won Friday’s election.
Voting was open to all band members, on and off reserve.
Jacob Jadis was re-elected as a band councillor, while Sheri Bernard and Chris Jadis were both elected as first-time band councillors.
Don MacKenzie, executive director of the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of P.E.I., congratulated all participants.
“On behalf of the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of P.E.I, I would like to congratulate Chief Gould, and Councillors Jadis, Bernard and Jadis on their successful election”, MacKenzie said in a statement. “And to all who put their names forward, you are to be commended for taking part in the democratic process.”
MacKenzie also extended appreciation to outgoing councillor Daren Knockwood, who did not re-offer, for his many contributions during multiple terms on council.
Last week saw the election of Darlene Bernard as chief of Lennox Island First Nation band council.
The band councils for Abegweit First Nation and Lennox Island First Nation are the two Mi’kmaq governments on P.E.I., which are the official representatives for all P.E.I. Mi’kmaq. The two councils also form the Mi’kmaq Confederacy of P.E.I. board of directors.
