New polling numbers are showing sustained popularity for Dennis King’s Progressive Conservatives four months after the last provincial election.
The poll, conducted by MQO Research, has the PCs at 40 per cent support amongst decided voters, an 11-point jump from the firm’s most recent poll before the election in April. The Greens currently stand at 34 per cent, six points lower than April, while the Liberals are at 23 per cent, three points lower than April. The NDP remains at two per cent support.
Twenty-six per cent of voters were undecided.
The findings of MQO are similar to a poll conducted in May by Narrative Research, which also found that most Islanders supported the PCs as their most preferred party. Polling by both firms had shown the Greens as the most popular party in the lead-up to April’s election.
“Premier King is currently enjoying a honeymoon with voters,” said MQO vice-president Stephen Moore.
“This level of support should provide him with a period of political stability as he navigates his way through a minority government.”
The MQO Research poll was conducted by telephone with 400 Islanders between July 31 and August 6.
The margin of error for the question of party support was ± 5.6 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.
