The City of Gatineau is asking residents to provide temporary housing to flood victims who’ve been uprooted from their homes.

In a press conference Wednesday, Mayor Maxime Pedneaud-Jobin asked property owners to contact the city if they have housing available, such as a landlord with a vacant property for rent.

With approximately 1,800 people registered as flood victims, interim housing could provide much needed respite for residents whose homes may be lost in the rising water. Mayor Pedneaud-Jobin says to expect more details soon, when the city has more information on how many volunteers step forward.

Gatineau’s record-breaking flood levels are forecasted to peak in the coming days. Of the 1,800 registered flood victims, more than 800 are families. Approximately one hundred people have called 311 to ask for emergency assistance in evacuating from their homes, the city says.

Property owners who wish to provide temporary housing to displaced residents should call Wassim Aboutanos at 819-303-1420. People are also encouraged to visit the Gatineau City website, www.gatineau.ca, to get updates and information on further volunteer opportunities.

Flood victims should call 311 for information and assistance.
