A GoFundMe campaign has been set up to help the family of an Island man who died earlier this week.
Cody Robert MacLean, 24, of Kingston, P.E.I. was fatally wounded after a fight broke out on Spring Street in Charlottetown Feb. 5.
The fundraiser will help with funeral costs, and whatever is left over will be used to set up an education savings account for MacLean’s young son.
MacLean was a first-year marketing and advertising management student at Holland College’s Tourism and Culinary Centre campus in Charlottetown.
Flags are flying at half-mast at Holland College campuses across the province in MacLean’s honour.
Sara Underwood, media and communications officer at the college, said counsellors have been made available to speak with the students.
“We have procedures that we follow, and one of them would be that we place counsellors on site at the campus that that student attended,” she said. “But, everybody else throughout the college would be encouraged to contact the counsellors if they’re experiencing any difficulties.”
The Guardian reached out to the family but was unable to get an interview.
However, in a statement to the CBC, MacLean’s brother, Mitchell MacLean, said Cody was “an amazing father” to his almost-two-year-old son.
He also said his brother, who had a history of criminal convictions, had “started to turn his life around since then” and will be missed by his whole family.
Nineteen-year-old Logan Raymond MacAusland of Charlottetown has been charged with second-degree murder in connection with MacLean’s death.
