Islanders dropped over $152,000 on cannabis products during the first day of legal sales on Wednesday.
According to data provided by P.E.I. Cannabis, total after-tax sales hit $152,408.35 on Wednesday. The Charlottetown retail outlet had the highest sales at $61,025.83, while online sales experienced the lowest total at $20,974.28. Summerside’s retail outlet took in $37,733.36 while Montague’s took in $32,674.88.
In all, the total tax revenue from day one was $21,811.88.
A new retail outlet is currently under construction in O’Leary.
Deputy Police Chief Brad McConnell said the Charlottetown Police Services didn’t write a single cannabis-related ticket yesterday.
Not only were there no tickets issued, McConnell said the department didn’t receive a single cannabis-related complaint.
This wasn’t too surprising, he said.
“I think the legalization yesterday prompted a bit of community tolerance on opening day. (It’s) a historic event,” McConnell told The Guardian.
“We weren’t expecting our phones to be ringing off the hook, so for the first day, so far so good.”
