CORNER BROOK, N.L. — Western Regional Waste Management will introduce fines and penalties to businesses that fall under the industrial, commercial, institutional (ICI) sector for non-compliance with its waste management ICI policy come Jan. 1, 2021.
Launched last October, the ICI policy requires those that fall under it to follow the appropriate guidelines by sorting waste according to the program.
The implementation included an ongoing education program to inform businesses and institutions of what was required.
As of Jan. 1, non-compliant loads brought to Western Regional Waste Management transfer stations will be subject to receiving a warning for the first offence of blatant non-compliance, a fine of $500 for the second offence, a $1,000 fine for the third offence and $1,000 for each offence after that.
Western Regional Waste Management says waste generators covered under the ICI policy should review their waste management strategies and make the necessary changes to their waste management program, including reviewing the policy, switching to clear/blue bags, offering a waste management station and educational materials for customers and staff, and connecting with the haulers of their waste to determine optimal methods of waste disposal.
