A U.S. Coast Guard cutter stopped by Halifax on Monday on the way up north.

The crew of the USCGC Tahoma all wearing face maks as per COVID-19 regulations, could be seen on board preparing for its temporary berth at HMC Dockyard.

According to a tweet from the Canadian Navy, the cutter was fuelling up before sailing north to join Operation Nanook.

The crew, again as per pandemic restrictions, will stay on board or on the jetty, and no visitors would be allowed on-board, the tweet said.

Operation Nanook involves about 350 Canadian Armed Forces personnel and internatinoal partners such as the U.S. Coast Guard in Resolute Bay and Rankin Inlet, a Defence Department news release said.

There are usually four deployments throughout the year.

"Ranging from ground and underwater activities to complex logistical support, Op NA-NU 20 will demonstrate the presence and capabilities of the CAF in the Arctic, and will improve our readiness to operate in the region: a key component of Canada’s Defence Policy – Strong, Secure, Engaged," the release said.

"Operations like Op NA-NU 20 also enhance Canada’s ability to work effectively with northern partners and Allies."
