HILDEN, N.S. — Two people died and 46 other tenants were displaced after a fire at an apartment building in Hilden on Saturday.

The fire at the building on Truro Road was reported at about 6:55 a.m.

The blaze was quickly contained, the Canadian Red Cross said, but some areas had smoke or water damage, and electricity was turned off, affecting elevators, safety systems and utilities.

A reception centre was set up at the Hilden firehall for tenants of the 22-unit, three-storey building.

Red Cross volunteers assisted 30 adults and 13 children with emergency funding for food, clothing and other basic needs, and provided temporary hotel lodging for 22 people. The other 24 people arranged to stay with relatives or friends.

Three tenants did not require any help from the Red Cross.

The fire is not believed to be suspicious but is being investigated by RCMP and the Office of the Fire Marshal.

Tenants were told they should expect to be out of the building for at least three days, the Red Cross said.
