Toronto police are warning people of the dangers of cannabis edibles after a child accidentally consumed such drugs.

On Tuesday, at about 9:30 p.m., police were called by Toronto Paramedic Services to attend a hospital.

Police say two children were with their mother in an apartment when one of the children found some cannabis edibles called Buzzy Peaches.

The child who found the drugs ate one of the edibles.

When the mother realized what had happened she called an ambulance and the child was taken to the hospital for treatment and released.

Police say the edibles were legally purchased and so charges will be laid at this time.

“The Toronto Police Service would like to take this opportunity to remind parents and caregivers about the dangers posed to children by cannabis and cannabis-related products,” the police said in a release.

“While these products may be legal, they must be treated like any other prescription or over-the-counter drug and be stored in a locked area and in child-resistant packaging. Since many of these products have similar packaging to non-cannabis products, it is also strongly recommended that children cannot see or have access to the place in which they are stored.”

Anyone who believes a child has consumed cannabis needs to seek help right away by calling the Ontario Poison Centre at 1-800-268-9017 or call 911 immediately.
