St. John's plans holiday lights celebration

That water must be cold, but the fowl at the duck pond in Bowering Park don’t seem to mind. I wonder if they are enjoying the lovely display of Christmas lights as much as the passers-by? Gary Mitchell did a wonderful job of sharing Christmas wishes from St. John’s NL with everyone across Atlantic Canada.

On Thursday, the City of St. John’s encourages all residents and businesses to light up St. John’s to celebrate the holiday season in a spirit of community togetherness.

Usually, the city hosts the annual Festival of Music and Lights with a tree lighting in Bowring Park. Due to COVID-19 precautions, the event — which attracts hundreds of residents — cannot go ahead. In its place, the city is co-ordinating  the event Holiday Lights St. John’s, the city said in a news release.

Residents and business owners are asked to join with their neighbours in a countdown and official city lighting at 5:45 p.m. Thursday. The countdown and lighting will include City parks, buildings and City Hall as well as numerous locations throughout the city such as: Confederation Building and the Prince Philip Parkway, Government House, Cabot Tower at the Signal Hill National Historic Site, MUN Botanical Garden, Downtown St. John’s and George Street.

“In these challenging times, we all need a little light and celebration,” Mayor Danny Breen said in the release. “Let’s join together as a community of hope and togetherness to make St. John’s shine brightly this holiday season.”

The countdown and lighting will be broadcast live on NTV/ OZFM and the city encourages everyone to post photos or videos of their personal countdown and lighting and tag the City of St. John’s on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter.
