ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — Details about where and when St. John’s residents can park this winter were announced on Tuesday.

From Dec. 1 to March 31, parking is prohibited 24 hours a day on streets designated as no-parking snow routes. These streets are marked with signs. The city says restrictions are in place so ice control and snowclearing equipment can safely service the streets.

For streets in the designated downtown area, on-street parking is permitted unless the street is scheduled for snow removal. Signs will be placed in snowbanks on the day of removal to indicate overnight parking will be prohibited. This year, downtown snow removal will occur between 11 p.m. and 6 a.m.

The downtown business district parking restriction will begin Wednesday, Jan. 6 unless otherwise declared earlier. While the ban is in place, people are not allowed to park between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., regardless of snow conditions, on Water Street from Waldegrave Street to Prescott Street, and on Duckworth Street from New Gower Street to Cochrane Street.

The on-street parking restriction for streets outside the designated downtown area will begin at 12:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 6. Vehicles parked on the street between 12:30 a.m. and 7:30 a.m., regardless of weather conditions, can be ticketed. This restriction may come into effect earlier than Jan. 6 if deemed necessary, and announcements will be made if that occurs.

There’s also a new 24-hour parking restriction this year for areas outside the downtown and business district, which will be declared on an as-needed basis to help enhance snowclearing. When this restriction is declared by the city, it will remain in place for 24 hours a day until it is lifted.
