Smoke forced dozens of residents of an apartment building in St. John’s’ east end to evacuate their building at about 5 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Firefighters from the St. John’s Regional Fire Department arrived at Regency Towers on The Boulevard to find smoke on several floors of the building.

Several search crews were sent in to investigate the source and they eventually located a burned-out component in the elevator machine room.

Firefighters cleared the smoke from the building and residents were allowed to return after about an hour.

There were no injuries.
