A 23-year-old Pouch Cove woman is in court today to face a lengthy list of charges related to the theft of a taxi near Long Harbour earlier this week.

The Whitbourne RCMP arrested Holly Canning Monday afternoon after originally responding to a call for assistance from a cab driver who reported having an unruly patron in his taxi.

The cabbie had pulled over to the side of the road and left his car to make the call, at which time Canning is said to have gotten behind the wheel before driving off in a dangerous manner.

That led to the police receiving a number of calls from concerned motorists reporting the dangerous driving of the cab.

Three civilian drivers used their vehicles and boxed in the cab to prevent the woman from leaving the scene. She allegedly struck one of those vehicles while she was backing up and trying to escape, causing damage to that vehicle and the taxi cab.

By that time, the police had arrived and Canning was taken into custody.

During the arrest, the RCMP say Canning made death threats to officers before she was transported to the detachment, where she provided breath samples that were nearly three times the legal limit.

She was placed in custody and charged with the following offences:

  • Impaired driving
  • Theft of motor vehicle
  • Possession of stolen property
  • Two counts of uttering threats
  • Dangerous operation
  • Two counts of breaching of a court order
