PARADISE, N.L. — In a two-hour span Tuesday morning, police nabbed 28 speeding drivers — including one travelling 150 km/h — on the Trans-Canada Highway in Paradise.
The driver who was caught driving 50 km/h over the speed limit was also issued a driving suspension, and the vehicle was seized. The driver was also charged under the Criminal Code for operating a motor vehicle while prohibited.
It was part of a joint collaboration by the RNC and RCMP traffic services Tuesday to identify aggressive and distracted driving in the community.
On Tuesday afternoon, the officers were in the area of a school zone in the metro region, observing traffic for aggressive and distracted driving.
Traffic services members issued six tickets for use of a cellphone while driving and 17 tickets for speeding, as well as seven tickets for failure to wear a seat belt.
RNC and RCMP traffic services are urging motorists to slow down and be aware of their surroundings while driving.
“An instant of distraction could mean a lifetime of regret,” police stated in a news release. “We request that any incidents of aggressive and distracted driving be reported, as we must continue to work together to build safe and healthy communities.”
