Starting next Monday, masks will be mandatory inside Newfoundland and Labrador public spaces

However, Dr. Janice Fitzgerald says the order will not apply to students in classrooms

Non-medical masks will be required in indoor, public spaces in Newfoundland and Labrador effective August 24.

Dr. Janice Fitzgerald, Newfoundland and Labrador’s chief medical officer of health, issued the order on Monday as part of the re-entry plans for the provincial school system.

“Today, I will be announcing a new special measures order that will require the mandatory use of masks in indoor public spaces,” said Fitzgerald.

“Effective August 24 wearing a non-medical mask that covers the nose and mouth will be mandatory required for people five years of age or older while in public indoor settings, such as common areas of office building, riding public transit, shopping, attending places of worship or a theatre of performing arts venue.”

A detailed list of where masks will be required, as well as exemptions, will be available at gov.nl.ca/covid-19 later today.

“The mandatory use of non-medical masks is another important step to further protect our families and communities, as when worn properly they can reduce the spread of COVID-19,” said Fitzgerald.

“However, wearing a non-medical mask in the community is not a substitute for physical distancing and proper handwashing.”
