NEW GLASGOW, N.S. — A 54-year-old Trenton man is going to pay the price for not maintaining proper social distance while shopping at the New Glasgow Walmart.

New Glasgow Regional Police Const. Ken MacDonald said officers were called to the scene Wednesday evening, by Walmart employees after the accused refused to comply with the requirement to maintain a physical distance from others of two metres even after being warned.

The man was issued a $1,000 ticket for failing to comply with regulations outlined in the Health Protection Act to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

“Police have been authorized to enforce orders under the Health Protection Act, to help protect all Nova Scotians against individuals that do not practice physical distancing and self isolation,” MacDonald said.

While individuals who violate the rules are fined $1,000, businesses can be fined $7,500.

Since Nova Scotia declared a state of emergency on March 22, residents are obligated to educate themselves about the directives and enforcement fines under the Health Protection Act and the Emergency Management Act. Nova Scotians can find more information at novascotia.ca/coronavirus .
