ST. JOHN'S, N.L. — An RCMP officer has been charged with firearms offences in connection with an incident on Bell Island in January of 2018.
Const. Michael Wheeler, who has been suspended with pay since February 28, 2020, was arrested Friday and charged with careless use of a firearm and pointing a firearm, after an investigation overseen by the Serious Incident Response Team Newfoundland and Labrador (SIRT-NL), the RCMP said in a news release.
The incident involved Wheeler and an acquaintance at a private residence, police said.
SIRT-NL director Mike King said the officer has been released on conditions to await a court date.
King said SIRT-NL had provided oversight to the RNC, which it asked to investigate the incident. SIRT-NL won't make any further comment, he said, as the matter will now make its way through the courts.
Wheeler was most recently stationed at the Holyrood RCMP detachment.
