NORTH SYDNEY, N.S. — The Cape Breton-Victoria Centre for Education is again looking to sell the North Sydney property that formerly was home to Thompson Middle School.

The tender closes June 11. The deadline for any questions or enquires to be submitted to the centre is June 3. The minimum acceptable bid is $80,000, unchanged from the last time it was offered up for sale last year.

Previously, tenders were issued jointly for the sale of the former Thompson Middle School in North Sydney, Boisdale School and Florence Elementary School — the only site that has a building that remains standing was Florence Elementary.

The sites were placed for sale after they were declared surplus to the centre’s needs.

The North Sydney property, located at 30 Regent St., is assessed at $53,200.

Any bids received will be evaluated to see if they are compliant with the request for proposals.

Each property has a minimum acceptable bid listed.

Potential bidders are directed to contact the Cape Breton Regional Municipality or the Municipality of Victoria County for zoning and land use information.

The tender documents state that the centre for education made no warranties regarding the condition of the properties or any buildings on them, including the environmental condition of the properties and the existence of any hazardous materials.

Thompson Middle School closed in June 2017. The building was demolished in 2018. At that time, officials indicated the building was so old and the condition was such that the best way forward was to demolish the building and then try to sell the land. An environmental assessment of the school was done prior to its demolition.

The North Sydney learning institution had been a mainstay in the community since 1949, serving as a high school in its early years and then as the school for much younger children up to its closing in 2016.

In its final year of operation, 138 students called Thompson their school. Most of them moved on to Sydney Mines Middle School.
