NEW WATERFORD, N.S. — Demolition of what remains of St. Agnes Convent is set to begin Wednesday.
The building, built in 1962 and currently vacant, was severely damaged by fire in the early morning of Jan. 25. The fire was deemed suspicious and is under investigation.
According to Cape Breton Regional Municipality spokesperson Jillian Moore, a request for quotes was quickly advertised and bids were accepted until 2 p.m. Tuesday. Work was expected to start this morning.
"We have security at the building due to the unsafe condition the building now poses," she said in a written statement. "Security will remain on-site until the building is down."
