A house fire in St. John’s has displaced three people and destroyed the structure.

When St. John’s Regional Fire Department firefighters arrived on scene on Topsail Road at about 2 a.m., there was heavy fire and smoke coming through the roof which had already partially collapsed.

Firefighters were seen breaking through a rear door and urging a man to get out of his basement apartment. It appeared the man was reluctant to leave his home without his cat and some belongings.

Fire, in the meantime, was spreading further through the upper level of the home and flames were shooting out both sides of the roof.

Platoon chief Paul Chaytor said it took some time to establish a water supply because fire hydrants in that area were located some distance away from the fire.

The water cannon on one of the pumpers was being used to dump large amounts of water on the blaze and a ladder truck was also brought in to hose down a large extension at the rear of the home.

There were no injuries and the incident is under investigation.
