SYDNEY, N.S. — In a continuing bid to halt the spread of COVID-19, public access to courthouses across the province will be restricted but fine payments can now be made online.

Access to courthouses is limited to those people who work in the building, who are involved in a court proceeding or who have an appointment and have passed the mandatory health screening.

For those who have a new or outstanding summary offence fines, the provincial court has extended payment deadlines a further 90 days from the original due date on the ticket, said Jennifer Stairs, communications director for the Nova Scotia Judiciary.

She said the directive was first issued in March 2020 and has been extended several times to help reduce the number of people visiting a courthouse in person during the global pandemic.

Stairs said individuals wanting to pay a ticket or other court fine can now do so online.

“A debit card or credit card and the ticket number are needed to complete an online payment. Court administration staff may help find the ticket number if they do not have it,” said Stairs.

She said for those without online access, they can make an appointment through court administration to access front counter services.

The provincial court contact information line can be reached at 1-877-445-4012. The provincial court office in Port Hawkesbury can be reached at 902-625-2665, while the Sydney provincial court can be reached at 902-563-3510.
