Two major science facilities at the University of Saskatchewan will benefit from federal funding announced Tuesday.
In a media release, the university reported that $77.5 million has been awarded to the Canadian Light Source (CLS) synchrotron and the Super Dual Auroral Radar Network (SuperDARN).
The funding through the Canada Foundation for Innovation (CFI) comes as part of $230 million spread across 14 Canadian research facilities announced Tuesday by federal Innovation, Science and Industry Minister Navdeep Bains.
The Canadian Light Source will receive $76.9 million to support maintenance and operations through 2023.
The CLS is the site of Canada’s only synchrotron and is currently devoted entirely to providing highly detailed imaging for projects related to the fight against COVID-19 .
SuperDARN, a global radar network for monitoring near-Earth space, got the remaining $549,782 of the funds announced Tuesday.
Earlier this year, the CFI awarded $11.3 million to VIDO-InterVac, a U of S-based research lab that is working on a coronavirus vaccine .
