Dwight Ball was all smiles as he began the speech, but other emotions care to the forefront Monday as he delivered what will be his farewell address as the Premier of Newfoundland and Labrador and leader of the province’s Liberal Party.

Speaking via an online stream from his hometown of Deer Lake, Ball often had a catch in his voice as he looked back at his growing up, his family, his friends and his time his politics, including more than five years as the province’s 14th premier.

He is not out of politics just yet, however; he will remain a sitting member of the House of Assembly for now.

Ball spoke after several video tributes, including from Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, the premiers and Seamus O’Regan, the province’s representative in the federal cabinet. And his remarks came just before the announcement of voting results for a new Liberal leader, a count which showed Andrew Furey as the premier-to-be.
