BADDECK, N.S. — The Department of Transportation and Infrastructure Renewal says its traffic division will be reviewing the accident data from three fatalities on Highway 105 last month.
Steve Warburton, spokesperson for the department, told the Cape Breton Post Tuesday the data will be reviewed when it becomes available, following fatal accidents on Dec. 8, Dec. 9 and Dec. 10.
In a story published Tuesday in the Post, Victoria County Warden Bruce Morrison and Coun. Perla MacLeod called on the department to reduce the speed limit on Highway 105 near Exit 8 from 80 km/h to 60 km/h.
The request comes following the Dec. 9 accident which occurred near the Irving gas station outside of Baddeck.
Morrison said a letter from council had been sent to the department on Dec. 21 requesting the speed reduction. Initially Warburton wouldn’t confirm the department received the letter but on Tuesday, he told the Post the letter has been received.
“The safety of motorists is the department’s priority,” said Warburton in an email. “Traffic engineering staff will need time to review the request before a response is sent to Victoria County council.”
No timeline was given as to when council could expect that response.
