A Charlottetown woman charged with two counts of infanticide will undergo a 30-day mental health assessment to determine her mental fitness.
On Wednesday, Charlottetown Provincial Court Judge John Douglas accepted the application for the mental health assessment for the accused – Shannon Dawn Rayner.
Rayner was 39 years old in July when she was charged with two counts of infanticide and two counts of disposing of the dead body of a child with intent to conceal the fact it had been delivered. According to court documents, she is accused of willfully failing to obtain medical assistance for a child between Feb. 1 and Feb. 28, 2014, and again for a second child between Nov. 16 and Nov. 18, 2016.
Rayner is further charged with disposing of the dead body of a child with intent to conceal the fact the baby was born by concealing it in a bag and placing it in a waste bin.
Rayner is currently not being held in custody.
Douglas adjourned the matter to Dec. 12 to allow for the completion of the mental health assessment.
