June is normally when Prince Edward Islanders start warmly welcoming summer tourists arriving by bridge, air and ferry — but this year, there won’t be as many.

“There’s been a change of plans, and this summer is going to look very different,” says Kent MacDonald, CEO of Tourism PEI. “For now, this is our Island — and since our visitors will be more limited this year than others, it’s going to be more important now than ever to support our local businesses.”

We already love soaking up every golden summer moment — taking in a round of golf, eating fresh seafood from the market and being with friends in the sun — and now we’re getting a unique opportunity to explore the Island and all the activities it has to offer.

“Now’s the chance to book that cottage and tour the Island. Check out a new restaurant and attractions in places across PEI you haven’t visited before. Go looking for new hidden gems.”

Islanders are also encouraged to make a summer bucket list featuring all their favourites — as well as the things they can’t believe they’ve never experienced — like visiting a lighthouse or trying oysters.

Just because summer is going to look different doesn’t mean it’s cancelled. After all, the best stories never go according to plan. Islanders are resilient and can find a solution to any problem, so let’s encourage everyone to make the most of their #ChangeOfPlans. Prince Edward Island residents are invited to visit ActivateOurIsland.ca to describe how they plan to embrace their summer change of plans for the chance to win their dream Island staycation.

Islanders are known for coming together to help each other out, so this summer let’s embrace our home with newfound curiosity and excitement.

“We live in the most beautiful place in the world, let’s make the most of it and #ActivateOurIsland.”
