CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Standing in front of a small audience at the Small Print Board Game Café in Charlottetown, P.E.I. singer-songwriter Dylan Menzie gives a heart-felt performance of “Deep in My Bones” just as sunshine bursts through the window.

Music P.E.I. executive director Rob Oakie congratulates Dylan Menzie who has received eight nominations in the 2017 Music P.E.I. awards.

There are smiles as people begin to relax and enjoy the warm rays.

This brief reprieve from winter came at a news conference for Music P.E.I.’s 2017 award nominations Tuesday.

But for Menzie, who was the opening act, there wasn’t much time to relax.

After he takes a seat in the audience and the list of nominees are read, his name comes up again and again.

By the end of Tuesday’s announcement, Menzie had received eight nominations, tying him with the pop rock band, Paper Lions, for the highest number of nods.

“It’s pretty incredible to be included – nominated with longtime friends and new friends and to have my girlfriend, Kinley, receive six nominations, as well. But to have eight nominations is overwhelming,” says Menzie who will perform later this month at the In the Dead of Winter Festival in Halifax and at the Winter Warmer Festival in St. Andrews-by-the-Sea, as well in a showcase at the Folk Alliance International in Kansas City.

“To have someone actually care about your music or come to see you play is an indescribable feeling.”

It’s also a great feeling for industry professional Jon Matthews.

“I think we all work exceptionally hard in the music business on P.E.I., and we have to take time to celebrate these big achievements.

“It gives us all a chance to collectively breathe a sigh and be thankful and appreciative of being able to do what we do,” says Matthews, who received nods for live music production professional and producer of the year, as well as for his recording studio, The Sound Mill.

Music P.E.I.’s executive director was pleased with the large number of nominees.

“There is a lot of great music being celebrated here, but I’m particularly encouraged to see the list of amazing new artists who are coming along,” says Rob Oakie, adding newcomers Nick Doneff and Kinley led the way for new artists with their debut recordings, garnering six nominations each.

Also receiving six nominations was Ten Strings and a Goat Skin.

Next, with three nominations each, were The Royal North, Jessica Gallant, SORREY, Atlantic String Machine and Fallback.

The Music P.E.I. awards will be handed out May 14 at the awards party on the final day of the May Run Music Festival. The festival runs May 10-14.

A full list of concerts, showcases and festival details will be announced in February.

Voting for the awards will open Monday, Jan. 23.
