CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Jazz-pop songstress Tia Brazda returns to Island Jazz this evening at Baba’s Lounge (181 Great George St.) as part of her coast-to-coast North American tour schedule.
The show starts at 8 p.m. and features local players Dan Rowswell on saxophone, Alan White on drums, Isaac Williams on bass and Ian Toms on guitar, as well as Brazda’s producer, Chris Graham, on piano.
Brazda brings a fresh collection of songs from her latest album, “Daydream”, which debuted at No. 1 on the iTunes jazz chart in Canada upon its release. The album finds Brazda moving in new directions from her swing-jazz sound, with elements of soul, bossa nova and pop. The album also features a “who’s-who” of Juno-nominated players, including Larnell Lewis of Snarky Puppy on drums, Shirantha Beddage on saxophone, William Sperandei on trumpet, Adrean Farrugia on piano, William Carn on trombone, and Marc Rogers on bass.
Brazda’s retro style and distinctive voice have established her as a strong, unique presence on the jazz scene both at home and abroad. Her music has been described as both “a hip pastiche” and a “walking musical catalog of 20th-century jazz styles”. Having honed her cutting-edge sound in the clubs of Toronto, Brazda burst onto the scene in 2012 with her electro-swing EP “Cabin Fever”, hitting No. 1 on the iTunes Canada Jazz Chart, as well as receiving airplay on BBC and CBC Radio, Jazz FM 91.1, and national campus radio. The follow up, full-length album, “Bandshell”, also debuted at No. 1 on iTunes, and received significant acclaim around the world, catapulting Brazda into her current high-profile status as a serious Canadian powerhouse.
Brazda has toured the world, performing at festivals such as the 2017 Montreux Jazz Festival, 2017 San Jose Jazz Summer Fest, 2016 Festival International de Jazz de Montréal (main stage) and the 2016 Xerox Rochester International Jazz Festival.
