The Mercer sisters of Horwood moved away long ago to other parts of the province and the world.

One lives in North Carolina, another resides in Ontario, while others live in various parts of Newfoundland and Labrador.

So, when Family Feud Canada producers asked if they wanted to be labeled as coming from St. John’s, their answer was 'no'.

Only Horwood will appear on television screens when their episode airs.

“That is where we grew up,” said Dale Mercer. “That is where we want to say and represent. We want Horwood up on that screen.”

The group are scheduled to leave for Ontario this week.

That is where we want to say and represent. We want Horwood up on that screen.

Dale is one of five sisters taking part in the new Canadian version of the popular American game show. She will be joined by her sister Wavey Mercer, Gertie Hodder, Hilda Moss and Geraldine Bennett. A sixth Mercer sister, Joyce Mercer-Miller, will also be there as the team’s alternate.

Their oldest sister Jean died suddenly 13 years ago. They called her the matriarch and they’ll have a piece of her there with them.

They will each wear a pink rose corsage, a combination of Jean’s favourite colour and flower.

“We miss her like crazy,” said Dale. “If I get the chance to introduce the family, I’m going to speak about (Jean).”

The Mercers applied for the opportunity to compete earlier this summer. They were asked to audition in St. John’s along with other Newfoundland families.

They received final word of their selection shortly after.

“We’re all excited,” said Dale.

Dale admits while she and the rest of her sisters are excited about being on the show, she is nervous ahead of travelling to Ontario Friday, Jan. 17.

Being the team captain, she is required in Family Feud tradition to answer the first survey question.

“Some of the girls are a bit quicker than I am,” Dale offers.
