Quarantine creativity

With a lack of acting or music prospects on the horizon during COVID-19 quarantine, Clare, N.S. native Danielle LeBlanc got creative with writing/acting partner Caroline Concordia.

Together, the pair made the physically distanced comedy short Reading, which is now available online.

LeBlanc was also sidelined in May 2019 with life-threatening deep vein thrombosis and pulmonary embolism, so she was looking forward to several projects in 2020 — of course, that was before the pandemic hit.

The Chronicle Herald's Stephen Cooke spoke with LeBlanc about the seemingly limitless creativity that allowed her to turn COVID lemons into comedy lemonade

A taste of place

Did you know oysters can take on a different taste based on the ocean region where they were harvested?

That fact - and the term "merroir" - are some of the many fascinating facts about the molluscs that can be found in SaltWire's latest In a Jiffy column, written by Mark DeWolf.

"Oysters, like lobster, were once considered poor people’s food, writes DeWolf. "Over time, the lowly oyster graduated from seaside sustenance to white linen standard."

Read on for more about the delicacy, including video tips on how to easily shuck your own oysters at home

State of the union

In 2018, Halifax musician Rich Aucoin took his show on the road, bicycling from Los Angeles to New York City, inspiring the songs on his new album United States out on Sept. 18.

As Cooke writes, "the music that came out of that 2018 journey of discovery ... is powerful, motivational, and anything but nostalgic."

More like anger, regret and uncertainty.

Read Cooke's interview with Aucoin about his journey down the famed Route 66, and listen to a couple of tunes, too

Streaming the superheroes

Looking for something to watch this weekend? Colin Chisholm has some suggestions in his always-super Streaming Wars entry.

Since you won't be getting some major superhero-themed big screen releases - like Marvel's Black Widow and Wonder Woman: 1984 - for a while yet, Chisholm has picked out some powerful small screen delights you can watch from the comfort of your couch.

In addition to those, he's got a few series and movies you may want to avoid.
