Partnership to benefit L'Arche Cape Breton

Earlier this month, members of UCT Council 883 visited L’Arche Cape Breton to formally announce a new partnership. Both organizations are optimistic that Uniting Communities Together – UCT and L’Arche will have a positive impact on the lives of marginalized people in our communities. United Commercial Travelers Club (UCT) Council 883, which operates in Sydney and area, has supported non-profit organizations on Cape Breton Island more than 50 years.

In October of this year, Council 883 announced the commitment to the donation of proceeds from UCT’s “wishing wells” to L’Arche Cape Breton. The wishing wells are small red containers found on the front counter of businesses such as service stations, restaurants and corner stores.

Several businesses in the Sydney area and throughout rural Cape Breton have welcomed the wishing wells. Currently they are located at Farmer’s Daughter Country Market, Charlene’s “Bayside” Restaurant, The Ark Store and MacAulay’s Esso in Whycocomagh, Wayne’s Variety in Judique, Archie’s Esso, Mabou, and at several locations throughout CBRM.

L’Arche Cape Breton, an organization located in Iron Mines and Orangedale, supports people with intellectual disabilities. The organization currently operates six homes where 25 people with intellectual disabilities live with 28 assistants. L’Arche also operates seven day programs that offer meaningful ways for members to spend their days, a chapel, and a house of welcome and retreat.

Assistants from all over the world come to live at L’Arche Cape Breton. Although the Department of Community Services funds the L’Arche homes, fundraising is ongoing to support the day programs at L’Arche Cape Breton. L’Arche operates two used clothing stores, an art studio, a bakery and café, an organic garden, and a summer recreational program for youth with disabilities.
