CHAMPNEY’S WEST, N.L. — If there’s one thing the Freeman family is all about, it’s fun.
And the group from Champney’s West is sure to bring lots of fun as they compete on Family Feud Canada next month on CBC.
The Freemans were selected to participate in the long-running game show in its first season in Canada after an application bid led to their audition in St. John’s last month.
Wanda Freeman-Pippy told The Packet after hearing about the opportunity and submitting a video, they were invited to St. John’s to audition in person.
Hashing together a song in the truck on the way in, Wanda — along with Bev, Darrell and Krystal Freeman, and Maggie Pippy — performed their tune, complete with “Baymen” t-shirts, Cape Ann hats, rubber boots and even a real codfish.
“We couldn’t stop laughing the whole way in,” chuckled Wanda.
They played to their strengths, as many residents of the tiny community of Champney’s West are used to performing, hosting an annual variety show with music, comedy and more.
“We said, ‘We're just going to be ourselves!’”
Wanda says she was shocked to find out they had actually been invited to the official taping in Toronto next month. She says they did it for the fun of it, and had fun doing it.
“We had just done it for fun. It was fun even if we never got picked — we just basically did it because we were all together and had a laugh,” said Wanda.
Now, they’re on their way to compete as one of 72 successful families.
Aside from the show itself, it’s also exciting for Wanda and Bev because they’ve both never been on an airplane. Wanda has never been off the island before.
“It’s a big experience for us,” she says.
She jokes they’re not nervous flyers, but they are superstitious about traveling on Friday the 13th.
The Freemans have practiced a little bit, with an app on their phones and an at-home computer game, but Wanda says they’re just going to do their best and have a good time.
“We’re going for fun. We’re going to play the best we can, and whatever it is, it is!”
They’re also excited to go to Toronto, to see the sites and enjoy a vacation so close to the holidays. She says they’re going to visit Ripley’s Aquarium, especially since Champney’s West has its own aquarium in their small community.
The Freemans will tape their episode on Dec. 15-16 at the CBC in Toronto. Wanda says they have a lot of friends and family who live in Ontario who are coming to cheer them on.
“When we go out there, we’re going to represent our family — which we’re a very close knit family; represent our community — which we’re very proud of; and we’re very patriotic towards Newfoundland.
“We will be true Newfoundlanders for sure.”
While CBC doesn’t have the exact date the Freeman family will grace screens across the country, Family Feud Canada premieres on Monday, Dec. 16 at 8:30 p.m. and airs four nights a week. It subsequently moves to 8 p.m. beginning on Dec. 23.
