Prince Edward Island may be known as the perfect summer destination, with its warm waters and red sandy shores. Yet off-season, the Island is full of surprises that are worth a road trip.
Where else can you slumber at an ice cream parlour, design your own sea-inspired pottery and walk the shoreline at low tide past a colony of great blue herons? Summerside, P.E.I. has it all.
Start your Summerside stay at Holman’s Heritage suites. There are three lovely, historic-inspired suites to choose from. It doesn’t get much sweeter than literally waking up above an ice cream parlour to the smell of ice cream and fresh-made waffle cones.
Holman’s family-owned ice cream parlour is located inside a beautiful historic home built in 1854. The home was set to be demolished, but the Meister family had other intentions. Today, it serves up one of the best-loved treats in the world: ice cream, all handmade on site, filled with creamy goodness and an array of delicious flavours that rotate all the time.
Pottery time: while in Summerside, making your own pottery at Island Stoneware is a must. It’s such a great way to get creative and explore your artistic side. You can pick a ton of stamps to choose from to add to your pottery ranging from shells to seahorses. Island Stoneware offers classes regularly, and with the holidays around the corner, it’s a great gift idea.
A bite and brew at Evermoore: Be sure to stop into Evermoore Brewery. Built inside the old train station, it is Summerside’s first craft brewery. Try a pint of Sugar Shack, imbued with the taste of Canadian maple, and pair it with a half-dozen baked PEI oysters for perfection.
A walk on the Boardwalk: Summerside has a fantastic seaside waterfront system. Boasting six-and-a-half kilometres of walking and cycling trails past lighthouses and Acadian forests, the Baywalk Boardwalk is a lovely way to spend time in nature. Head out at low tide to get some great views of the seabirds lingering by the shore.
