SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — A comprehensive guide to Island land and marine mammals is set to launch in February in Summerside.

Mammals of Prince Edward Island and Adjacent Marine Waters is rooted in historical accounts and local research, and illuminates the lives of P.E.I. mammals large and small.

From the little brown bat to the Sowerby's beaked whale, the book highlights each species in illustrated details and outlines the continued need for conservation efforts in P.E.I.

Published by Island Studies Press at UPEI, the book is co-authored by Rosemary Curley, retired wildlife biologist and Nature P.E.I. president, Pierre-Yves Daoust, professor emeritus at the Atlantic Veterinary College, UPEI, Donald F. McAlpine, head of the Department of Natural History, New Brunswick Museum, Kimberly Riehl, a resource management officer with Parks Canada, and J. Dan McAskill, a retired forest manager and wildlife biologist.

Curley and Riehl will give a presentation about local terrestrial and marine animals at the book launch at Eptek Art and Culture Centre on Sunday, Feb. 2.

The event runs 2-3:30 p.m. and is free to all.

Books will be available for sale.
