New ‘Anne’ cast announced, retelling 'Anne of Green Gables' story

Amybeth McNulty has been cast in the role of Anne Shirley in CBC’s new “Anne’’ television series.

“Anne" began production in P.E.I. in September and has now moved to Ontario.

“We auditioned over 1,889 girls from around the globe for the inspiring and complex role of Anne,’’ said executive producer Miranda de Pencier, adding that Amybeth is versatile and delightful.

The 14-year-old Irish-Canadian across was raised in Donegal, Ireland and started acting at the age of six, appearing in numerous productions on stage and on screen.

She starred in the feature film “Morgan’’ with Kate Mara and in the television series “Agatha Raisin’’ and “The Sparticle Mystery’’ for CBBC in the United Kingdom.

A trained singer, Amybeth also starred in London’s production of “The Sound of Music’’.

“Amybeth is a wonderful and sensitive actress who embodies all of Anne’s qualities,’’ said showrunner and executive producer Moira Walley-Beckett. “She’s soulful and inquisitive, mercurial and passionate. Her ability to convey pain and joy is breathtaking. Amybeth is Anne for a new generation.’’

Also starring as siblings who adopt Anne, Marilla and Matthew Cuthbert, are Geraldine James (“Sherlock Holmes’’, “Girl with the Dragon Tattoo’’) and Canadian stage and television actor R.H. Thomson (“Road to Avonlea’’, The Englishman’s Boy’’).

While “Anne’’ will honour the story known around the world, it will also chart new territory. Anne and the rest of the characters will experience adventures reflecting timeless and topical issues, including themes of identity, feminism, bullying and prejudice.

Niki Caro (“Whale Rider’’, “McFarland USA’’, “Zookkeper’s Wife’’) will helm the two-hour premiere.

The show is expected to debut in the spring.
