Now, this may be controversial, but up until I couldn’t find it on the shelves anymore (so, like five years ago) — I used to eat the Heinz pureed apricot baby food.

And while you may think it’s weird, it was really one of the only ways I’d get a serving of fruit in me. Guys, I’m telling you, it’s like pudding — but fruit! Remember, folks, I’m a picky eater and of course that includes the healthy food groups.

Now that my favourite apricot treat is no longer in stores, I’ve stepped up my game and have smoothies to fill the void.

And so, dear readers, we’ve reached the point of my food rant — making smoothies and using the best pairings of fruits to get the best tasting drink.

I personally throw a bunch of fruit/veg in my smoothies — bananas, strawberries, blueberries, peaches, mangoes and avocado (mind blown; I know).

 Smoothies are great all year long. In the summer, try fresh ingredients, and switch to frozen in the off-season to make it an affordable treat.

Now according to the ol’ internet, there are a number of fruit pairings that will make a rockin’ good smoothie:

  • Stereotypical strawberry and banana

 There must be a reason they always partner these two fruits together — they taste gooooood! Strawberries are high in antioxidants (like most fruits), vitamin C, manganese and potassium. Bananas are high in potassium, they aid in digestion, they’re good for heart health and cholesterol and they give you energy.

  • Blueberries and mango

 Blueberries are high in antioxidants but low in calories, it’s said then can help with damaged DNA (leading it to be associated to be beneficial for the body against cancer and Alzheimer’s). As for mangoes, well, they have a long list of benefits. They’re good for your heart, hair, skin, and digestive system. They may boost your immunity and aid in eye health too.

  • Raspberries and peaches

What’s better than peaches (my favourite fruit)? How about throwing them together with some raspberries in a smoothie for a tangy yet sweet taste. Raspberries are high in fiber, minerals and necessary vitamins for overall health. They may protect against things like arthritis, diabetes and cancer. Peaches (the sweet part of this pair-up) are packed with nutrients and antioxidants. They can aid in digestion, heart health, and may even reduce allergy symptoms (yes, please!)

  • Avocado and strawberry

This is what I would call a gentle tasting smoothie. Nothing is too tangy and in your face in terms of flavour but it tastes delicious nonetheless. Not to mention avocados are high in good fatty acids, have more potassium than bananas, can help with heart health and are said to even help lower cholesterol.

Now friends, these are just the base pairings of fruit in a smoothie. I also throw in orange juice, milk, yogurt, chia seeds and hemp hearts. Chia seeds are high in fiber, protein and Omega-3 fatty acids. Hemp hearts are great for hair, nail and skin health and contain anti-inflammatory properties.

Boom. There you have it, some serious smoothie inspiration. Now grab your blender, juicer or whatever else there is available to make a fruit blend and enjoy.
