A newly formed national agricultural youth council will have some Island representation.
Ila Matheson from St. Peters Bay, P.E.I., was recently named to Canada’s Agricultural Youth Council.
“I grew up on a sheep farm where we sell lamb and sheepskin products locally. We make small square bales of hay and sell to people with horses or pets," she said in a news release.
The farmer- and shearer-in-training lives and works on her family’s sheep farm when she’s not studying at Dalhousie University's Agricultural Campus in Truro.
Matheson is entering her fourth year of an agriculture degree at Dalhousie , majoring in animal science with a minor in plant science.
“I work with my parents on the family farm during the summers when I am not at school. I involved with both the hay, livestock and tanning sheepskins, as well as general day to day happenings of the farm,” said Matheson.
“With shearing, I get to travel and meet different farmers, which gives me a window into all sorts of sheep production styles. Additionally, in studying agriculture I get to see many other sides of the industry from crops to other livestock and processing. This gives me an interesting perspective on the interconnectedness of agricultural disciplines."
