SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Summerside has launched its annual campaign that is designed to provide plenty of opportunity to enjoy the outdoors.
For many, the winter months tend to be cold and blustery, making it a challenge to get outside and be active.
That’s why the City of Summerside presents the Active Winter campaign each year, which offers residents various activities to showcase the many winter activities that exist during the winter months.
“Active Winter has been an extremely popular program offered by our Community Services Department for several years now,” said Mayor Basil Stewart. “Each year it grows in various aspects and is eye-opening how much there is to do outdoors in our great city during the winter.”
Active Winter offers residents more than 30 days of programmed activities throughout the city’s parks and greenspaces, such as show-shoeing, fat-biking, skiing, hiking, indoor and outdoor skating, shiny hockey, tobogganing and much more.
“The community services department continuously works to keep residents active by offering programming 12 months of the year,” said Coun. Cory Snow. “With the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, we anticipate a very busy Active Winter (campaign) as many people are looking for alternative ways to improve their mental and physical health.”
Previous years were packed with winter activities, and this year will be no different. The oval at Queen Elizabeth Park and outdoor rink at Schurman Park will be flooded regularly through the winter for ice-skating and hockey, and a monster snow hill for tobogganing is in the plans for the grounds at Credit Union Place and Queen Elizabeth Park.
