Anyone reading Ancient Fall, the final volume in the Legend of Rhyme Series by Jaime Lee Mann, would never think of it as a book about conservation.

Written in poetry and prose, the magical tale describes a world full of mermaids, witches, pixies, phoenixes and several sets of twins.

When I discovered that Mann, a P.E.I. author, had woven an environmental message into the subtext, I was delighted.

“It’s a good time to write a book about Mother Earth taking back the planet,” said the Morell resident, whose latest title is getting lots of attention from young readers and families.

“It’s being received very well. Now that the series has wound up, the kids are excited to see how it all ended after they followed the characters all the way through.”

At a glance

  • Jaime Lee Mann written a series of seven middle grade fiction novels featuring magic spells, ancient immortals, a horrible goblin and plenty of adventure for two the brave tweens, Ariana and Asher Caine.

Students were also excited to learn that, by taking responsibility for their actions, they can help save the planet.

“Climate change is important to me so when we can catch those young kids and get them thinking about these things, through the fiction they’re reading it might have a greater impact.”

Mann introduced the environmental theme in Into Coraira, the second book of the Legend of Rhyme series, which came out in 2015.

“I had a clear image of how I wanted the book to end. I wanted it to end with this utopic earth; with magic helping to bring the earth back to her original state.”

From there on in, an environmental theme was hidden in the books for children.

“It was a lot of fun personifying Mother Nature.”
