The Commission scolaire de langue française (CSLF), P.E.I.’s French-language school board, is planning to update its secondary-level education program to harmonize the content with 21st-century learning and recent scientific research in pedagogy.
The update is the product of collaborative work between the CSLF and the Department of Education and Lifelong Learning.
The last update to the secondary program dates back to 2008. After 10 years, the CSLF and the department evaluated the results of the initiative and agreed to consult the school principals and vice-principals, and to take into account the new research on secondary-level pedagogy before updating the high-school program.
Numerous changes are expected to be implemented once school closures are no longer in effect because of the coronavirus. Among other things, the CSLF will review its specializations, integrate its career course and personal and social development course within other courses, combine its health and physical education courses and integrate school trips within the instruction program. The CSLF will also explore the establishment of a virtual school to offer more courses in an efficient manner.
Before launching the initiative, the CSLF will be analyzing the results of the surveys to students and their parents, establishing a structure and an action plan for course selections, exploring the possibility of integrating the ninth grade into its credit system, ensuring that optional courses come with a teaching guide and maximizing its equipment and facilities such as trades learning spaces and laboratories.
