CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Young writers in P.E.I. will soon have the opportunity to learn more about their craft.

On Saturday, Feb. 22, the P.E.I. Writers’ Guild is hosting its first-ever workshop for young writers, ages eight to 13 years old, at the Haviland Club.

The day-long workshop will be facilitated by bestselling middle-grade author Jaime Lee Mann. Entitled Framing your Short Story: An Outlining Workshop for Young Writers, the workshop will focus on starting the process of writing a story.

The goal, by the end of the day, will be for each participant to leave with a 10-page short story outlined, including character sketches, plot development, and ideas for the story’s beginning and ending.

The P.E.I. Writers’ Guild wanted to run a workshop for young writers in February because the deadline for the Island Literary Awards is Feb. 28.

Participants are not required to submit to the literary awards, but the Writers’ Guild does want to make participants aware of this opportunity.

Unlike with the adult categories of the literary awards, there is no cost to enter the provincial writing awards as a student.

Participants are asked to bring a notebook (or paper), a pen/pencil and a packed lunch.

The cost for the workshop is $45. There is a minimum registration number required in order to run this workshop.
