P.E.I. Women's Institute announces top exhibitors from Provincial Exhibition, fall workshops

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — The PEIWI board of directors is pleased to announce winners from the Provincial Exhibition and a few fall events.

Numerous awards marked the completion of a most successful 95th year of WI involvement at the Handcraft, Horticulture and Arts Show of Old Home Week.

The Premier's Craft Education Award was presented to Kari Ferguson during WI’s Awards Day by premier Dennis King. The award is to fund one major training event or two short courses within two years of presentation with the aim of expanding their chosen craft to others in the province. These awards, sponsored by the department of innovation and advanced learning, are valued at $1,000. 

Recently announced were the results from the People Choice Awards. Top honors from public votes went to the Montague 50 Plus Club for Favorite Quilt, Hillegonda Visser for favorite needlework, Charlotte Miller for favorite hooked rug, and Dawn E. Riley for favorite art.

The company of Bernardin annually sponsors special awards involving their products. This year’s Bernardin’s winners are: Yvonne Cormier, best of craft creative award; Marilyn Sentner, jam/jelly award; Roma Birt, gift pack collection and Kari Ferguson, best home canning award.

PEIWI has a variety of events slated for early fall.

An Island Buffet, a cooking class with Margaret Prouse, is scheduled for Wednesday, Oct. 16 at the Farm Centre, 411 University Ave. in Charlottetown.  The evening will consist of cooking demonstrations featuring Island-grown produce, meat, dairy products and eggs in dishes for weekday meals and special occasions. Participants will taste samples and take home recipes. Tickets are $10 and are available online at eventbrite.ca using An Island Buffet with Margaret Prouse:WI Cooking School or, in person, at the WI office, 40 Enman Cres. in Charlottetown. 

The annual WI fall workshops are also coming up. This year will feature A Few of My Favourite Dishes, featuring local products and crafting a reusable bag on the theme of Reduce, Reuse and Recyle. Sessions will take place Tuesday, Oct. 22, 9 a.m. at the Sherbrooke Community Hall in Summerside and Thursday, Oct. 24, 9 a.m., St. Joachim’s Parish Hall in Vernon River. Pre-registration is required by Friday, Oct. 11.

In fall branch news the Kelvin Grove WI Fall Fashion Show and Luncheon will be held Thursday, Oct. 10, 12 p.m., at the St. Eleanors Lions Club with fashions from Tan Jay/Alia. There will be door prizes and a draw with proceeds going the Prince County Hospital and community events. Tickets are $30 each, and available from Kelvin Grove WI members.

The Village Green WI has issued a challenge this fall to sister WI branches to assemble a Thanksgiving Dinner in a Box for a family in need. This is a P.E.I.-wide program and further information can be received by contacting Social Development and Housing at Access P.E.I. Montague at 902-838-0722.
