Island A Cappella, P.E.I.’s only women’s barbershop chorus, is celebrating the announcement that one of its members has been chosen as the winner of an international scholarship.
Jennifer Carson, who has been a member of the chorus since 2015, was recently selected as the 2020 recipient of the Judith Waite Scholarship. Through an application process, the $1,000 annual scholarship created in 2010 by Waite as her legacy, is awarded to a member (or family member) of the Harmony, Inc. organization studying music in a post-secondary setting.
Carson, originally from Summerside and currently a resident of Charlottetown, is about to enter her second year of the bachelor of music program at the University of Prince Edward Island.
“We’re very fortunate to have Jenn as a member of our chorus,” says Island A Cappella president Colleen Murphy.
“We’ve benefited from her many talents including her natural singing ability and extensive background as a dancer and dance teacher. She’s not only a member of our lead singing section but also the head of our performance team. We especially appreciate she’s continued to include the chorus in her busy schedule in addition to her studies, her part-time teaching career and raising a young family with her husband, Christopher Gallant.”
The selection of Carson as this year’s winner is particularly significant as this is the final year the scholarship will be offered.
“I have been supported so incredibly by Harmony, specifically the best cheerleading squad Island A Cappella, in my musical growth and journey,” says Carson. “This news was such a light in a dreary time."
Harmony, Inc. is an international organization of women singers whose purpose is to empower all women through education, friendship and singing. The organization currently has just under 2,000 members in the United States and Canada.
