CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — Nora McCarthy-Joyce, the recipient of the 2019 Mentor Award of the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty, will receive the award on Wednesday, Nov. 20, during a dinner in her honour at the Rodd Charlottetown Hotel.
The event opens with a reception at 6:30 p.m. with dinner served at 7 p.m. Tickets for the dinner are $30 and available until today from Bill Hogan at 902-394-3070 or by email, [email protected].
McCarthy-Joyce, who lives with her family in York, P.E.I., was chosen to receive the honour because of her belief in “service above self,” states a news release from the Rotary Club of Charlottetown Royalty.
“And while it is evident in all roles it is most evident in her role as principal of J.J. Sark Memorial School where she was called upon to perform duties of nurse, mother, librarian, planner, outdoors educator in addition to performing the principal role.”
A people person by nature and a professional educator by training, McCarthy-Joyce possesses the qualities of a skilled mentor who demonstrates genuine concern for people by always listening to their story before engaging as a mentor. At the Fort McMurray Catholic School Board, she dealt with the ill effects of screen time overuse a decade before it was officially recognized.
At the Aboriginal Family Literacy Initiative in Atlantic and the P.E.I. Literacy Alliance, she made teacher training days and family literacy guides, “Sharing Our Gifts”, fun-filled and not a struggle.
At the J.J. Sark Memorial School, her teaching skills were supplemented by mentoring that elevated community standards in health, education and citizenship.
While working as executive director at Family Services P.E.I., her analytical skills identified office efficiencies and client outcomes where mentoring was used to effect cultural change.
Now as mental health and addictions community relations specialist in the P.E.I. Department of Health and Wellness, McCarthy-Joyce constantly uses her mentoring abilities to build relationships across individuals and organizations in pursuit of positive change.
