The Rustico Bay Seniors Club is offering a number of activities, beginning this week, at its newly renovated club.

These activities will be offered to everyone interested in participating, with limited numbers, because of social distancing. The goal is to lift peoples’ spirits and provide a welcome break from isolation.

The activities will include cards (auction), yoga, internet cafe and ceilidhs.

Co-hosting the ceilidhs, which will be held bi-weekly beginning Sept. 19 at 8 p.m., are well-known musicians Laurie Dempster and Kaitlyn Gallant. Dempster has loved music for as long as she can remember. Born and raised in Halifax, she has always looked forward to spending summers in Rustico at her grandmother’s home and fondly remembers the family hootenannies. A multi-instrumentalist and vocalist, she plays piano, guitar and banjo.

Gallant, a native of Rustico, has a deep appreciation for music-making as well. For her, it was more than simply playing an instrument or singing a song – it was a way of life.

“Born into a family that could see my musical potential, I was encouraged to pursue music as a hobby and presently, as a performer,” she says.

A multi-instrumentalist, step-dancer and vocalist, she plays guitar, mandolin, fiddle and saxophone.

“Performing publicly is always enjoyable, but performing in a venue whereby the crowd is dancing and singing along, is most rewarding.”

The hosts are looking forward to welcoming a special guest at each performance through until Christmas. This is a 19-and-over event, and admission is at the door, which opens at 7:15 p.m.

There is a limit of 40 people in the audience because of social distancing.

Card games are held every Monday at 7 p.m., and yoga is every Monday and Wednesday at 10:30 a.m. Activities are made possible through a grant from New Horizons Canada.

The Rustico Bay Seniors Club is located at 2104 Church Rd., Rustico. For more information, call Art at 902-963-2615.
