SUMMERSIDE, P.E.I. — Two longtime friends are teaming up to raise money for charity.

Moe Hashie and Robert Poirier, who have been friends for 40 years, have combined Poirier’s carpentry skills and Hashie’s fundraising knowledge. Poirier, who owns Island Portable Buildings, has built and donated a 12x20 building. Tickets are $20 each and all proceeds will be split evenly between the Evangeline ATV Club and the Salvation Army Food Banks.

“I had bought a building from Robert two years ago and I asked him if he might be interested in building a building to do a fundraiser and he said, ‘Yes, absolutely,’” said Hashie, who lives in Summerside. “We came up with the idea and we weren’t sure who we would raffle the building for.

“Robert’s involved with the (Evangeline) ATV Club, a non-profit organization, and we both came up with the idea of the Salvation Army Foodbanks because it is tough times, especially with COVID-19. We reached out and everything is a go.”

Poirier, who is from St. Raphael, near Wellington, noted the duo wanted to come up with a fundraiser that benefits Islanders across the province and he feels this is the perfect fit.

“This year, I wanted to give back to all Islanders and, because of COVID-19, people are struggling, and I figured this would be the perfect year to give back,” said Poirier.

The draw will take place Sept. 6 and the target, Hashie noted, is to raise $10,000 for each organization.

“I’m hoping we can reach our goal,” said Poirier. “I know if we don’t, we are going to be close.

“We appreciate everyone supporting this good cause.”

This is the fourth year Poirier has donated a building. He provided one for the Evangeline ATV Club the three previous years as well.

Hashie noted ticket sales are going well. He said sales exploded in Montague three weeks ago as between 400 and 500 tickets were sold in two weeks.

“The good people Down East took a liking to the building and the cause,” said Hashie. “Now it’s in Wellington and the same thing is happening in Wellington.”

Along with donating the building, which Hashie noted could sell for $10,000 or $12,000, Poirier is also transporting it from site to site for ticket sales.

“I am so impressed by him,” added Hashie, who added the opportunity to help our families in need is very rewarding for both him and Poirier. “Hopefully, there will be children with full bellies.”
