GUEST SERMON: Trusting God during a difficult time

In this week’s guest sermon, Major Rev. Tom Hamilton says that ultimately, whatever our age, each one of us shares the same purpose in life - to love God, and to love others.
Faith invokes action and service, which may seem difficult regarding the call for social or physical distancing, writes Rev. David Filsinger, but taking time to make a phone call or send a message makes a difference in the lives of others. - 123RF Stock Photo

Hebrews 11:1-3 MSG

The fundamental fact of existence is that this trust in God, this faith, is the firm foundation under everything that makes life worth living. It's our handle on what we can't see. (2) The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd. (3) By faith, we see the world called into existence by God's word, what we see created by what we don't see.

In a very short time, the world has experienced unprecedented change and uncertainty. Day-to-day life has shifted for many; stress and anxiety are overtaking people’s lives as fear exponentially emerges. Will I be able to provide for my family? Will I lose everything I have worked for? Will I become sick or ill?

Now is the time to centre our lives, not on the latest news, but on the word of God. Faith is the basis of our relationship to God. For those who believe, it is the bedrock of assurance that God is still in control. Faith is not denial or wishful thinking, but rather our response to whatever circumstances we find ourselves in. That is why we are invited to “cast all your anxiety (fear/worry) on him because he cares for you.” (1 Peter 5:7)

This is a wonderful time to seek the Lord through prayer, listening to his voice that speaks guidance and wisdom into every situation. In prayer, give thanks to the Lord for all his blessings and provision. Ask God for a spirit of wisdom and revelation to lead those in authority over us. Pray that God would strengthen those who are sacrificing their time and talents to ensure health and safely to all. Prayer connects us to the promises of God. The prophet Isaiah understood this to be true for the people of God in his time: “But now, God’s message, the God who made you in the first place…the One who got you started: "Don't be afraid, I've redeemed you. I've called your name. You're mine. (2) When you're in over your head, I'll be there with you. When you're in rough waters, you will not go down. When you're between a rock and a hard place, it won't be a dead end – (3) Because I am God, your personal God, The Holy of Israel, your Savior.” (Isaiah 43:1-3 MSG)

Faith also invokes action and service. This may seem difficult regarding the call for social or physical distancing. However, taking time to make a phone call or send a message makes a difference in the lives of others.

This past week I have received many notes of encouragement; in turn I have been able to connect and pray with many who are isolated. Faith also looks for tangible ways in which to care for family, friends and neighbours. Instead of hoarding, look for ways to share. These things make life worth living.

Furthermore, faith inspires peace and hope. Yes, the Bible is keenly insightful concerning the reality of fear. Jesus said that there will be “people fainting with fear and with foreboding of what is coming on the world.” (Luke 21:26 ESV).

But scripture also promises the gifts of peace and hope, the confidence that God is faithful and will fulfil his promises to those who know and love him. The words of Jesus speak clearly: “I have said these things to you, that in me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world." (John 16:33 ESV)

Certain faith amid uncertain days enable us to live in the “full assurance of hope until the end.” (Hebrews 6:11 ESV)
