Even with the end of Summer Reading Club, there’s plenty to see and do

Beth Clinton, regional librarian at the Confederation Centre Public Library, holds up “Glass Houses” by Canadian author Louise Penny, which made the Top 10 list of most borrowed print titles across P.E.I. in 2018.

CHARLOTTETOWN, P.E.I. — It’s been a couple of days of celebration.

The Summer Reading Club closing party was yesterday. The participants enjoyed crafts, games, prizes and snacks.

The Teen Summer Reading closing party is today at 1 p.m. Be there or be square (because we’re all up on the new teen slang).

After all the summer reading, celebrating and partying we will need a day off so the library will be closed Aug. 16. (I told my daughter we were closed for her birthday. It’s actually for Gold Cup and Saucer day but let’s not tell her that.)

Of course, even with end of Summer Reading Club the fun never stops in the Children’s Library. So, drop in Aug. 19 for a fun session with Brilliant Labs at 10:30 a.m. Robotics, electronics, coding? Who knows what’s on the menu with Brilliant Labs, but it’s guaranteed to be exciting. Crazy Creators will continue for the rest of August at 2 p.m. on Fridays. Drop-in Doodles will be available for the rest of the month on Saturdays starting at 10 a.m.

We’re not just for kids so on Aug. 15 at 2 p.m. drop into the Seniors’ Café for coffee, tea and a chat. Wednesdays in August the Newcomers Association will be hosting an EAL Conversation Circle at 10:30 a.m. On Aug. 27 at 4 p.m. is your chance to meet for the 5 Minute Book Club. Tell us about a favourite read and listen while others do the same. If you’re taking part in our Adult Bookish Bingo be sure to get your bingo cards turned in to the library by Aug. 24.  You don’t want to miss your chance to win a gift certificate to Long & McQuade.

Online borrowing

Summer is pretty busy at the library so we’re taking a break on Sept. 2 and closing for Labour day. Don’t forget that with Overdrive and the Libby app the library is available 24/7 online and you can still borrow e-books and e-audiobooks.

September programs

Don’t panic that summer is over. Sept. 9 marks the return of regular weekly programs in the Children’s Library. For the ever-ready-to-read preschool crowd we offer Family Storytime on Tuesdays at 3:30 p.m. and Wednesdays at 11 a.m. For littler ones we have Toddler Time on Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. Also, on Thursday Wiggle, Giggle, Read where babies and caregivers enjoy songs, tickles and rhymes, starts at 1:30 p.m.

On Fridays at 11 a.m. we have a new addition to the roster—Family Game Time. Join us to play a family game and make some new friends while having fun and getting un-plugged. On Sundays there is always never-ending Lego fun starting at 2 p.m.

Craft Club for kids re-appears on Sept. 3 at 6 p.m. with a surprise craft. On Sept. 17 at 6 p.m. there will be bedtime stories for ages 3-5.  Wear your pajamas and bring your favourite stuffed friend to snuggle with.

On Sept. 18 there will be a special story time to celebrate the 50th anniversary of “The Very Hungry Caterpillar”. The puppet show will start at 10:30 and will be followed by activities, crafts and more—a caterpillar theme will definitely be on offer that day.

September programs for adults include the Mid-Morning Book club on Sept. 11 at 10 a.m. This will be their Catch-up After the Summer meeting and we will all be discussing our best summer reads so drop in if you would like to join the book club. Sept. 18 at 6:30 p.m. we will be holding our monthly Craft or Fail session. All supplies are provided but please call to register.

Look in a book...

Speaking of crafts, did you know the library has an extensive collection of books about all sorts of crafts? Check out, “Crafting with Wooden Crates and Pallets” or “Do-it-yourself garden projects and crafts: 60 planters, bird houses, lotion bars, garlands and more”. Planters and lotion bars in one book?  This one’s for everybody. Or even consider “Sew Perfect Pets: 18 adorable fabric animals to make for your home” because everybody needs a patchwork snake in their lives.

Beth Clinton is the regional librarian with the P.E.I. Provincial Library Service. Her column appears in The Guardian once a month. For more information on programs, call the library, 902-368-4642.
