For an actor, landing a role in a theatrical production doesn’t happen overnight.

It’s something that takes time, training and dedication.

It also requires patience.

That’s what Abby Batchilder of Cornwall, P.E.I., is experiencing this summer.

After taking classes at the Guild Musical Theatre School for the past two years and performing in the chorus of “Lion King” and “Aladdin Junior” last summer, she landed the key role of Scuttle the seagull in “The Little Mermaid Junior” at the Charlottetown theatre.

“I adore the character. He’s so special. And I love being part of the show. It’s so much fun,” says 13-year-old thespian.

Abby realizes the role is a reward for the growth she’s experienced over the past two years.

“It was great to be in the chorus. But it’s great to be able to say I went from part of the chorus to a main (character) and having the chorus support me. It’s such a great experience.”

Similarly, Jennifer Arsenault is stretching her fins as Atina, Arielle’s older sister, this season.

Like Abby, she has paid her dues – taking classes, appearing in shows and volunteering at The Guild Musical Theatre School’s drama camps.

“It’s really fun. I really like working with the kids,” says Jennifer, 14, who likes the career path she’s on.

“Musical theatre has really made a difference in my life. I’ve met so many people and it’s really improved my confidence.”

Abby and Jennifer and are two of the 37 company members in The Guild Musical Theatre School shows this summer.

“The Little Mermaid Junior” Mondays this summer. Its final performance is on Aug. 19 at 11 a.m. It is the story of Ariel, a mermaid who lives in a magical underwater kingdom. She wants to leave her ocean home and live in the world above. To make that happen she defies her father, King Triton, makes a deal an evil sea witch, and convinces Prince Eric that she’s the girl whose enchanting voice he’s been seeking.

“The Little Mermaid Junior” is based on the 1989 Disney animated musical and the classic story of the same name by Hans Christian Anderson. The Guild production is directed by Lori Linkletter.

Linkletter is pleased with the growth she’s seen in these young actors.

“Abby excelled in the summer camp and the winter programs really honing her skills. We’re really happy to give her a great part. She’s spectacular and memorable in the shows and a joy to work with,” says Linkletter, artistic director of children’s programming at The Guild.

Likewise, Jennifer, who also attended the summer camp and winter program, “has grown so much.”
“She’s actually understudying the lead role of Sebastian the crab and has gone on twice and done it spectacularly.”

Both actors have worked at the summer camps on a volunteer basis to help inspire the children to give it their all.

“They’re a wonderful example of what this program can do. They’re not only improving the talent but developing friends they’ll have for a lifetime.”
